APM North West Network: Driving Change to Reduce Construction Waste

The construction industry generates 60% (140m tonnes) of all UK waste, including new or reusable materials that never get the chance to fulfil their intended purpose. While the ambition for a more circular construction industry is growing, significant practical barriers remain.

Join us for a visit to The Rebuild Site, a construction reuse hub in Carlisle that is working with contractors, local authorities, manufacturers and communities to tackle these challenges. Through a guided tour and presentation, you'll discover how practical problem solving, collaboration and innovative thinking are helping to reduce waste, keep valuable materials in use and influence wider industry change.

The session will explore the logistical, commercial and behavioural challenges involved in construction reuse, sharing honest lessons from five years of developing and testing new approaches. Whether your interest lies in sustainability, inclusive leadership or delivering change, this event offers practical insights that can be applied across a wide range of projects.

Construction waste is one of the industry's biggest sustainability challenges, yet much of the material that ends up in skips could still be reused. Delivering change requires more than good intentions - it relies on collaboration, innovation and practical solutions that work within the realities of live construction projects.

This event offers a behind-the-scenes look at The Rebuild Site, an award-winning construction reuse hub that has been developing practical ways to keep valuable building materials in use since 2021. Working alongside contractors, local authorities, manufacturers, education providers and community organisations, Rebuild is helping to overcome some of the barriers that prevent construction reuse becoming business as usual.

The visit will include:

  • A presentation exploring the scale of construction waste, the challenges facing the industry and how Rebuild has developed practical solutions through collaboration, continuous improvement and innovation.
  • A guided tour of the reuse hub, including the processes behind material collection, assessment, storage, sales and redistribution.
  • Real project examples demonstrating how stakeholder engagement, logistics, problem solving and behavioural change have shaped Rebuild's approach.
  • Opportunities to ask questions, network with fellow professionals and discuss how similar principles could be applied within your own projects and organisations.
