The construction industry generates 60% (140m tonnes) of all UK waste, including new or reusable materials that never get the chance to fulfil their intended purpose. While the ambition for a more circular construction industry is growing, significant practical barriers remain.

Join us for a visit to The Rebuild Site, a construction reuse hub in Carlisle that is working with contractors, local authorities, manufacturers and communities to tackle these challenges. Through a guided tour and presentation, you'll discover how practical problem solving, collaboration and innovative thinking are helping to reduce waste, keep valuable materials in use and influence wider industry change.

The session will explore the logistical, commercial and behavioural challenges involved in construction reuse, sharing honest lessons from five years of developing and testing new approaches. Construction waste is one of the industry's biggest sustainability challenges, yet much of the material that ends up in skips could still be reused. This event offers a behind-the-scenes look at The Rebuild Site, an award-winning construction reuse hub that has been developing practical ways to keep valuable building materials in use since 2021. Working alongside contractors, local authorities, manufacturers, education providers and community organisations, Rebuild is helping to overcome some of the barriers that prevent construction reuse becoming business as usual.

Emma Porter is the Founder and CEO of The Rebuild Site, a Community Interest Company leading practical solutions to reduce construction waste and increase the reuse of building materials.

With a psychology degree, INSEAD MBA and background in construction and rail, Emma brings a people led, practical, hands-on perspective to the challenges of delivering sustainability in complex projects. Emma previously was Managing Director at Story Contracting and led the Transportation Advisory and Consulting practice at AtkinsRealis.

Emma is a regular speaker at industry events and is passionate about diversity and inclusion and about turning ambitious sustainability goals into practical action through collaboration, innovation and problem solving.
